I feel so lucky to have been born in one of the most magical places in my country – the Rose Valley. Every year in late May and early June my hometown Kazanlak flourishes. Festive spirit and rose blooms embrace the whole area, inviting people from all over the world to experience the beauty of the valley. Today I’m taking you on a magical trip with the smell of roses.
Bulgaria, and the Rose Valley in particular, is the largest producer of rose oil. It is responsible for over 70% of the world production, which serves to the purposes of the perfumery and cosmetic industries. Each year a Rose Festival is held at the beginning of June to celebrate the rose picking ritual and the traditions behind it. So, I thought it’d be interesting to share with you part of my remarkable culture by introducing you to the 112th Rose Festival.
The Rose Festival’s end is marked by a spectacular parade, mixing traditions of past and present, as well as giving pride to the different cultures living together in the area. Each year a rose queen is chosen to patronize the event and represent the beauty of our town in front of different world cultures. So much to see there! It’s a vibrant show full of magnificence and uniqueness. But words can’t describe it. You should see it.
I sincerely hope I tempted you to visit the 113th Rose Festival next year. Would you? :)
P.S.: I’m very thankful to the local municipality for granting me exclusive access to the main events. This made it possible to walk you through the beauty of the Rose Festival.
